What are the Assam election 2026 results and when will they be declared?
Assam went to the polls on April 9, 2026 in a single phase, with a record voter turnout of 85.96 percent across all 126 constituencies, surpassing the previous high of 82.04 percent recorded in 2021. The votes will be counted on Monday, May 4, starting at 8:00 AM IST. Every major exit poll released after the polling ban was lifted has projected a strong win for the BJP-led NDA alliance, though the margin and what it means for Assam and for national politics heading toward 2029 is still being debated.
This article covers everything you need before May 4: exit polls from all major pollsters, the seats that will define the result, the three voting blocs that decided this election, how to watch live, and a step-by-step guide to checking results on the official ECI portal.
Assam election 2026 at a glance: Key numbers
Assam Legislative Assembly has 126 seats. A party or alliance needs 64 seats to form a majority government.
Elections were held in a single phase on April 9, 2026. According to the Election Commission of India, 2,49,58,139 voters were eligible to vote, spread across 31,490 polling stations. Male voter turnout was 84.8 percent, female voter turnout was 85.96 percent. Female turnout equalling and in some measures exceeding male turnout is a significant data point that both parties have claimed in their favour.
In 2021, the NDA won 75 of 126 seats: BJP 60, AGP 9, UPPL 6. Congress won 29 seats with 29.7 percent vote share. AIUDF won 16 seats.
Counting on May 4 takes place simultaneously across all 126 constituencies from 8am. Assam’s results will come alongside counting in Kerala, Tamil Nadu, West Bengal, and Puducherry, making May 4 one of the largest simultaneous election result days in recent years.
What do the Assam exit polls 2026 predict?
The Election Commission of India bans the publication of exit polls from the time voting begins in the first phase of elections until the last phase of polling concludes. In the 2026 state elections, the final phase was West Bengal Phase 2 on April 29. The EC ban lifted at 6:30 PM on April 29. Assam exit poll projections were released first, at approximately 5:30 PM, as a staggered release across the evening.
Every major pollster predicts a BJP-led NDA majority. Here is the full picture:
| Pollster | BJP-led NDA | Congress-led Opposition | Others |
| Today’s Chanakya | 102 (±9) | 23 (±9) | 1 |
| Axis My India / India Today | 88 to 100 | 20 to 35 | 1 to 5 |
| Matrize / India TV | 85 to 95 | 25 to 32 | 1 to 6 |
| CNN-News18 | 88 to 101 | 20 to 35 | 1 to 5 |
| People’s Pulse | Up to 72 | Not specified | Not specified |
Majority mark: 64 seats.
In vote share, exit polls broadly place BJP at 45 to 48 percent and Congress at 38 to 40 percent. Axis My India additionally found that 48 percent of Assam voters named Himanta Biswa Sarma as their preferred choice for Chief Minister.
The one outlier is People’s Pulse, which projects a lower BJP tally of up to 72 seats. This would still be a majority but a much narrower one. If People’s Pulse is closer to correct, the night of May 4 will be significantly more interesting than the other pollsters suggest.
A note on exit poll accuracy: In 2021 exit polls broadly predicted a BJP win in Assam and were correct. In West Bengal the same year, they predicted a BJP win and were badly wrong. Exit polls are directionally useful but not definitive.
Key battleground seats to watch on May 4
Results from specific constituencies will arrive before the full picture is clear. Watching these seats early will tell you which way Assam is going.
- Jalukbari is the most important single constituency. Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma is seeking re-election here against Congress candidate Bidisha Neog. Sarma has held this seat since 2011. He first won it as a Congress MLA and held it through his defection to BJP. If Sarma wins by a margin above 20,000 votes, the BJP wave is confirmed. A margin below 10,000 votes signals something more complicated is happening statewide.
- Jorhat is Congress’s prestige contest. Gaurav Gogoi, the Congress state president and former Lok Sabha MP from Jorhat, is making his first attempt at the state assembly. He faces BJP’s Hitendra Nath Goswami. Gogoi has staked significant personal credibility on winning this seat. If he wins, Congress has a credible face for the next five years in Assam. If he loses, the party faces a leadership vacuum at a crucial moment.
- Sivasagar is the most unpredictable seat in the state. Akhil Gogoi of the Raijor Dal, the farmer and rights activist who won this seat in 2021 while in judicial custody, faces both BJP’s Kushal Dowari and AGP’s Prodip Hazarika in a three-way contest. BJP and AGP have a friendly contest arrangement here, which complicates the arithmetic. Akhil Gogoi’s ability to hold this seat against the NDA alliance will be a test of whether independent grassroots movements can survive in Assam’s polarised political environment.
- Dispur seats the state’s capital constituency. Senior BJP leader Pradyut Bordoloi, who defected from Congress just before the election, faces his former party’s candidate Mira Borthakur Goswami. An early Dispur result will signal whether the BJP’s defection strategy paid off and whether voters rewarded or punished political switching.
- Binnakandi in the Barak Valley is the seat to watch for the minority-belt story. AIUDF chief Badruddin Ajmal contests from this constituency. AIUDF’s final seat count will indicate whether Muslim voters in Lower and Central Assam consolidated behind Congress or split between Congress and AIUDF, a split that would benefit BJP in several constituencies.
- Tamulpur in the Bodoland Territorial Region will reveal the health of the BJP-BPF alliance in the northeast of the state. NDA’s Biswajit Daimary faces UPPL’s Pramod Boro, in a rare seat where the NDA’s internal dynamics are tested rather than its contest with Congress.
- Doomdooma in Tinsukia district is the tea belt bellwether. Tea tribe and Adivasi communities make up 58 to 60 percent of the electorate here. The BJP’s Rupesh Gowala faces Congress’s Durga Bhumij. If BJP holds this seat comfortably, the tea tribe migration from Congress to BJP that began in 2014 has held. If Congress wins, the 35-seat Upper Assam tea belt could produce surprises.
The three voting blocs that decided this election
Assam’s politics cannot be understood through a simple BJP versus Congress frame. Three specific communities have functioned as kingmakers.
- Tea tribe voters are descendants of labourers brought to Assam during the colonial period to work on tea plantations. They are concentrated in Upper Assam and can influence outcomes in more than 35 constituencies. Historically the backbone of the Congress party, tea tribe votes began shifting to BJP in 2014 on the promise of Scheduled Tribe status and development.
The BJP government’s Mission Basundhara scheme, which distributed land titles to families who had occupied tea garden land for generations, and the Orunodoi cash transfer scheme, which reaches approximately 75 percent of Assam’s households, accelerated this shift. Congress campaigned in 2026 on raising the daily wage of tea garden workers to Rs 350 to 400 and granting ST status to six ethnic groups.
Exit polls suggest the BJP’s material delivery has been more persuasive than the Congress promise, but even a partial swing of 15 to 20 percent of tea tribe votes back to Congress could upset the upper Assam count.
- Muslim voters concentrated in Lower and Central Assam form the backbone of the opposition base and can influence 20 or more constituencies. The 2026 Congress strategy was to project a more Assam-centric identity to appeal to indigenous nationalist sentiment rather than overt minority appeal. This created a calculation problem: distancing from minority-identity politics may appeal to Jatiya voters but risks splitting Muslim votes between Congress and AIUDF, precisely the outcome that benefits BJP in those closely contested seats.
- Women voters have become a decisive force in Assam. The record female turnout of 85.96 percent, matching male turnout, is primarily attributed to the Orunodoi scheme, which provides monthly direct cash transfers to women as the designated household beneficiary. Exit polls note a significant swing among women voters toward the BJP, driven by what analysts are calling “Orunodoi economics,” a political model where direct benefit transfers to women create a loyal voter base that is independent of caste, community, or traditional political affiliation.
BJP versus Congress: Alliances, strategy and what a third term means
- The NDA alliance in 2026 comprises BJP (88 seats), AGP (26 seats) and BPF (11 seats).
- Notably, BJP and UPPL did not have formal seat-sharing arrangements this cycle, unlike 2021.
- The opposition Asom Sonmilito Morcha, revived in November 2025, brought together eight parties: Congress, Raijor Dal, Assam Jatiya Parishad (AJP), CPI(M), APHLC and CPI(ML).
- AIUDF contested separately rather than formally aligning with Congress, a strategic decision that left the anti-BJP vote susceptible to splitting in minority-heavy seats.
BJP has governed Assam since 2016, first under Sarbananda Sonowal and since 2021 under Himanta Biswa Sarma. A third consecutive term would be historically significant. No party in modern Assam has won three consecutive assembly elections. The Congress ruled for 15 consecutive years under Tarun Gogoi (2001 to 2016) but that was a single party run, not back-to-back wins in the current competitive environment. The leadership swap from Sonowal to Sarma in 2021 functionally reset the anti-incumbency clock, allowing BJP to campaign on a new personality while standing on ten years of infrastructure.
The 2023 delimitation exercise, which increased Scheduled Tribe reserved seats to 19 and Scheduled Caste seats to nine, also reshaped the electoral terrain in ways that broadly favoured BJP’s coalition strategy. Sarma framed the 2026 contest as a referendum on whether Assam’s indigenous population would choose continuity and development or return to a Congress that he characterised as the party of illegal immigration and appeasement.
Congress’s Gaurav Gogoi counter-framed the election around unemployment, flood management failures, rising living costs, and what he described as the weaponisation of the immigration issue to distract from governance failures. Whether that argument found sufficient resonance will be known on May 4.
How does vote counting work in India?
Vote counting for Assam 2026 on May 4 follows a structured process that the Election Commission of India has standardised across all state elections.
- Step 1: Counting halls open at 7:30 AM. Counting agents from all parties take their designated positions at counting tables.
- Step 2: Postal ballots are counted first. These include votes from service personnel and absentee voters. Postal ballot results can produce early leads that shift significantly once EVM counting begins. Do not interpret the first 30 to 45 minutes of trends as reliable indicators.
- Step 3: Electronic Voting Machines are brought in and opened round by round. Each round covers one EVM table. A typical constituency requires multiple rounds, with each round tallying the votes from one EVM before moving to the next.
- Step 4: After all EVMs in a constituency are counted, the Returning Officer totals the votes for each candidate, resolves any disputes or recount requests, and formally declares the winning candidate.
- Step 5: The Returning Officer reports the result to the ECI, which updates results.eci.gov.in in real time.
Early trends from Assam will be visible by 9 to 10am. A clear directional picture usually emerges by noon to 1pm. Final official results for all 126 constituencies are typically declared by evening, though closely contested seats may take longer if recounts are requested.

What does the Assam result mean beyond Assam?
Assam sends 14 Members of Parliament to the Lok Sabha. In the 2024 general election, BJP won 11 of those 14 seats. A strong assembly performance in 2026 would cement BJP’s dominance across the northeast heading into the 2029 general election, which is the next major electoral contest.
The Assam result will also be read as a test of the BJP governance model built by Himanta Biswa Sarma. If the exit polls hold and BJP wins 88 to 102 seats, Sarma’s approach of combining welfare delivery (Orunodoi, Mission Basundhara) with hardline immigration rhetoric will be validated as a replicable template. BJP strategists will study the result closely for lessons applicable in other states.
For Congress, Assam represents the most credible opportunity to demonstrate that Gaurav Gogoi’s rebuilding effort is working. A strong showing, even in defeat, and particularly a Jorhat win for Gogoi personally, would signal the party is competitive again in the northeast. A heavy loss, below 25 seats, would raise serious questions about the Asom Sonmilito Morcha strategy and the decision to keep AIUDF at arm’s length.
