A rare hantavirus outbreak on a Dutch cruise ship has triggered a WHO alert across 12 countries. Three people are dead. Eight cases are confirmed or suspected. Indian passengers were on the ship. Hantavirus is a rodent-borne virus that has existed for decades, primarily in the Americas, Asia and Europe. It does not normally spread between humans. Most people who get infected have come into direct contact with infected rodents or their droppings, urine or saliva.
The current international alarm centres on a specific strain called the Andes virus, first identified in Argentina in 1995. The Andes strain is the only hantavirus known to occasionally spread from one human to another, and even then only through prolonged, close physical contact, not through the air.
The outbreak began on the Dutch expedition cruise ship MV Hondius. A Dutch couple who boarded the ship on April 1, 2026 in Ushuaia, Argentina, are believed to have contracted the Andes virus during a bird-watching trip through Argentina, Chile and Uruguay in the weeks before boarding. They were likely incubating the virus when they stepped on deck.

The MV Hondius brought hantavirus to international headlines, but the underlying situation is in South America. Argentina’s health ministry reported more than 100 hantavirus infections since June 2025, roughly double the caseload over the same period the previous year. This is an existing endemic problem that briefly intersected with international travel.
The Dutch couple believed to be the index case spent four months travelling through Argentina, Chile and Uruguay on a birdwatching road trip before boarding the ship on April 1. Argentina is investigating the precise location of their exposure. The Andes virus circulates in rodent populations in southern South America. Outbreaks in Argentina, Chile and Uruguay are not new. Hospital clusters have occurred in past outbreaks. All were contained. None became pandemics.
